Recently Luke Continho posted a video about Sympathetic nervous system and para-sympathetic nervous system. I liked the video so much that I saved it and later tried to show it to my husband. He didn't seem too impressed by it. According to him he is always calm! (That's a joke!) And I myself suffer from PCOS, my doc's advice to reduce tension closely follows the advice to reduce weight at all our consultations.
I see so many queries posted on here and other health groups, regarding Acidity, cholesterol, random uneasiness, constant headache, arm ache, PCOS, Thyroid problems, T2 Diabetes even Arthritis... People inturn advice them to cut down on rice, do a 'detox', use cold pressed oils or go completely oil free, gluten free... the advices are never ending. They are good advices but not complete.
No one ever advices to reduce tension. We all can agree that all of us are constantly agitated about things of past, present and future. It might sound like some sadhu baba giving pravachan, but our emtional health has very real severe physiological effects. Tension has connection with cortisol and adrenaline levels in our body. persistent long term exposure to these hormones contribute to weight gain, increase in Cholesterol, indigestion and inflammation. Most of the common ailments today are inflammation related. If we reduce inflammation, we reduce our problem.
You might acknowledge your tension actively or deny it. But subconsciously we are all taking tension. We recall and relive arguments, real or imagined insults, daughter had a fight with the neighbour kid or just simple tension of what to make for breakfast the next day.
Our brain is two organs in one. There is the physical brain and the psychological mind. As we detox our body and brain so should we detox our mind. The brain requires Jeera & Turmeric but the mind requires 5 mins of meditation. Luke Continho gives a simple exercise to calm our nerves, reduce cortisol levels and trick the body into thinking that there is no tension. It is to take deep breaths. This is just a band aid..
What if we do this deep breathing exercise everyday? Just for 15-20mins. The result will be more permanent than doing doing just when we feel our Blood Pressure rising.
How to do it -
🌿 Sit in a calm quiet comfortable place. You don't have to sit down. You can sit on chair even. Wear ear plugs or headphones if you must. But no music.
🌿 Close your eyes.
🌿 Take a deep inhalation. Follow the breath as it enters your nose, into your lungs and all the way till your stomach expands.
🌿 Exhale.. and follow the breath again, starting from your stomach and out of your nose.
🌿 Keep your mind on your breath. You won't have time to think of anything else.
It is my resolution for this new year to try and meditate for atleast 15-20 mins each day. We can consider it a medication and take a dose of deep breathing along with all our pills. I know it's easier said than done. I've been trying to meditate for the past week and successful done it only thrice. But persistence is the key to success..
