BaLedinD Palya

Banana stems are very nutritious. They are very good source of iron and soluble and insoluble fibre. On rainy evening, hot rice, ghee and hot hot palya are soul calming! Almost feels like a cheat meal!

Banana stems are quite tricky to chop. There are several videos in YouTube that demonstrate how to. Due to the high levels of iron, they oxidise very quickly and turn black. To stop this oxidation they should be kept submerged in water (if going to be used immediately) or in turmeric water. If not in water then it should be tossed in generous amount of lemon juice.

Banana stem can be had raw or cooked. You can make a salad with cucumbers, soaked moong dal and mustard tadka, you also add this to whipped curd and make raita. We should have this atleast once a month to reap it's benefits.

On my dinner plate is steamed white rice, Fenugreek chutney, beetroot Poriyal, banana stem palya and salad.
